Love comes in all forms, it doesn’t always have to be a big gesture, even the smallest actions can go a long way. If you think about it, even receiving a WhatsApp or an emoji from the right person can make your whole day. So maybe it’s no harm having a day to celebrate love if it means it can bring a smile to someone’s face.
However, there’s something to be said about receiving a handwritten letter. The fact that someone took the time to sit down and write how they feel, even with our busy lifestyles, makes it even more special.
So to ignite your inner creative here are some of our favourite love letters written the old-fashioned way, maybe they will inspire you to grab that pen & paper and if not, we have some other fun creative ideas to help you below!
Prince Albert to Queen Victoria
Dearest deeply loved Victoria,
I need not tell you that since we left, all my thoughts have been with you at Windsor, and that your image fills my whole soul. Even in my dreams I never imagined that I should find so much love on earth. How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine. Those days flew by so quickly, but our separation will fly equally so. Ernest [my brother] wishes me to say a thousand nice things to you. With promises of unchanging love and devotion,
Your ever true Albert.
Emily Dickinson to Susan Gilbert
…Susie, forgive me Darling, for every word I say – my heart is full of you, none other than you is in my thoughts, yet when I seek to say to you something not for the world, words fail me. If you were here – and Oh that you were, my Susie, we need not take at all, our eyes would whisper for us, and your hand fast in mine…
Napoleon Bonaparte to Joséphine de Beauharnais
...The charms of the incomparable Josephine kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart…. I thought that I loved you months ago, but since my separation from you I feel that I love you a thousand fold more. Each day since I knew you, have I adored you more and more...
Johnny Cash to June Carter
Happy Birthday Princess,
We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes we take each other for granted.
But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 earthly reason for my existence.
I love you very much.
Happy Birthday Princess.
Leave a note
As they put the dishes away, brush their teeth or even as they dash out the door finding a little post-it or notecard wishing them a good day will have them smiling ear to ear for the rest of the day.
Write a poem
If you’re not the next Pablo Neruda not to worry, a simple rhyming or acrostic poem are both easy and fun to do. (They’ll appreciate the effort if anything)
A jar full of hearts, their favourite snack or a cartoon couple. It doesn’t need to be perfect it just needs to be by you and all you’ll need is a scrap of paper and a pen!
Everybody loves a snack to go with their afternoon tea, so why not crack an egg and whisk up a batch of biscuits for your loved one, the biscuit may not last a lifetime but the sentiment will.
Write a love letter…to yourself
Who says it's only for couples?
It never hurts to show yourself a little (or a lot!) of love, so why not take a short stroll, a long bath and write down everything you achieved and learned this last year and let yourself know how great you are. The list will be longer than you think: we can promise you that!
